An update has surfaced on Tottenham and their pursuit of Djed Spence in the summer transfer window…
What’s the speech?
Fabrizio Romano has claimed Spurs will start negotiations with Middlesbrough over a deal for the full-back later this month.
The Italian reporter has also stressed that Fabio Paratici has prioritized two positions after signing Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster and Yves Bissouma earlier this summer.
He Tweeted: “Djed Spence deal. No negotiations this weekend, Tottenham have been really interested since March but no official offer yet, new direct contacts expected next week. Right-back* and centre-back, two priorities for Spurs in the market.”
Antonio Conte will be delighted
The Italy head coach will be delighted with the news for a number of reasons.
Firstly, he will be excited by Paratici’s prospective swoop in signing Spence as the defender is a promising young talent with the potential to make a difference as a first-team full-back next season.
Ex-Premier League forward Ian Wright compared him to some of the best full-backs in the top flight last season, saying: “When we talk about right-backs playing at an incredible level, we’re talking about Reece James and Trent, but one like that I haven’t seen a combative, technical, daring performance for a very long time.
“I said to him in all seriousness, ‘That plain that we saw there? They should be in the Premier League.’ As simple as that.”
In the Championship, the 21-year-old made two goals and four assists in 42 starts on loan for Nottingham Forest – creating a total of six “great chances” for his team-mates. This shows he has the attacking quality to charge forward from defense to make an impact in the final third, suggesting he would be suited for a full-back role in Conte’s 3-4-3 system.
As such, the Italy manager will be delighted at the prospect of having the England Under-21 international available next season.
The head coach will also be delighted with this update from Romano as it shows Paratici is working hard and trying to get all the club’s business done early. Although the Spurs boss has already signed three players, he is prioritizing other areas and planning steps to improve the team.
This will leave Conte pleased as hopefully it will give him enough time in pre-season to bed in players and prepare them for the 2022-23 season.
