The star stumbled upon the claim, which was brought up during a Google search, and set the record straight on Twitter when he challenged it.
Hugh fired back, insisting the reason he and his wife tied the knot was “love”.

He shared a screenshot of search results for his wife Anna’s full name, which yielded an online article published by website Nicki Swift in December 2020 claiming he married Anna for “passport reasons.”
The Bridget Jones’s Diary actor first married three years ago and the article quotes him in an interview with USA Today as saying that he and Anna believe marriage is a “pretty absurd social construct” before discussing their different names in speak their passports.
Hugh, who shares a child with TV producer Anna, said when speaking about getting married: “I didn’t like going through immigration to countries where it was like, ‘Everybody with a Grant passport over here and everybody others over there. “
