The decision to let Kaya live with Klitschko came as the star was struggling with alcohol and pill addiction.
“It was the hardest thing I could do,” the New York native said of Kaya’s move abroad.
“But the best thing for my daughter was making sure she was okay, taking care of me and making sure I could be a good mother to her. And sometimes that means letting go,” she added.

The mother-of-one opened up about her protracted battles with addiction in the interview, revealing that her substance abuse began when she was just 15 – and then spiraled out of control as she battled postpartum depression after giving birth to Kaya in December 2014.
She revealed her battle with postpartum depression combined with her addiction to drugs and alcohol led her to make the “heartbreaking” decision to send her daughter away to live with her father in Ukraine.
Panettiere says she didn’t drink during her pregnancy with Kaya, but she admits that she fell off the wagon shortly after her daughter was born and her drinking problems continued to spiral out of control from then on.

After sending her daughter away to live with the former professional boxer, whom she split from just months earlier in 2018 after a nine-year on-off relationship, Panettiere’s drinking continued to deteriorate — to the point where she Had to be hospitalized with jaundice.
After ending up in the hospital, Panettiere finally found the strength to seek treatment for her addiction, eventually going into rehab for eight months, where she says she found the support she needed to face her demons to ask directly.
Speaking to Good Morning America on Wednesday, the actress insisted Kaya – who was known to have last lived in currently war-torn Ukraine – “is very safe where she is” and “has a lot of friends.”
“She’s my favorite little person,” she said, adding. “And to see how she handled this whole Ukrainian situation really blew my mind.”
