Athletic have now shared an update from Tottenham Hotspur involving Villarreal star Pau Torres as transfer chief Fabio Paratici casts his net wide.
The Lowdown: Spurs chase new centre-back…
The Lilywhites are certainly eager to sign a new left-footed centre-back for manager Antonio Conte after the Italian guided them to a Premier League top-four finish and Champions League qualification.
Many, many names have been considered or weighed in by Spurs in recent weeks, including Alessandro Bastoni, Josko Gvardiol, Marc Guehi, Gleison Bremer, Stefan De Vrij, Clement Lenglet and Torres (GiveMeSport).
Sharing news about the latter man, The Athletic made a promising suggestion.
The latest: Athletic make Torres claim…
According to their information, Torres is still a target and ‘could see Tottenham as a more attractive destination’ this year after turning down approaches from Paratici in 2021.
He’s apparently not a ‘priority’ over the club’s other goals but still ‘ticks all the boxes’ he did 12 months ago.
The verdict: take the step…
Reports of a potential swap deal involving midfielder Giovani Lo Celso could sweeten the deal and we certainly think Torres is one of their best options and a real alternative to Inter Milan’s Bastoni.
According to WhoScored, the Villarreal stalwart has averaged his highest rate of successful aerial duels for 90 and the second most clearance – standing out as a real presence under manager Unai Emery.
Called a potentially ‘world-class’ signing by Spurs insider John Wenham, Torres would come with a similar price to Bastoni and Paratici could sidestep negotiations by triggering his £55m release clause.
Who should Tottenham sign after Forster?
Other (let us know in the comments!)
