Newcastle made initial contact with Everton through Anthony Gordon but the Merseyside club are unwilling to sell.
Newcastle are looking to add a wide midfielder to their squad this summer and have identified Gordon as a target.
Sky sports news was told that Newcastle have not made an offer but was more of a preliminary investigation as they weighed their options.
However, Everton are determined to keep the 21-year-old, making a deal for Gordon very unlikely to materialise.
A £35million figure has reportedly been mooted for the England Under-21 international, who scored four goals last season.
Newcastle have other targets in this area, including Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby.
Interested in making a double-signing from Everton with Gordon and Richarlison, Tottenham eventually opted to buy the Brazilian in a £60m deal as the Toffees resisted their advances.
What’s going on with the pursuit of Diaby?
Newcastle United retain a stake in Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby.
Diaby is one of several attacking players believed to be considered by the club this summer.
It’s understood there’s a gap between what Newcastle are willing to pay for the 22-year-old France international and the price Leverkusen are asking.
Will Newcastle’s Ekitike be pursued?
Newcastle are still looking to sign Reims striker Hugo Ekitike but are focusing on other attacking targets after reaching an impasse in negotiations with the Ligue 1 club.
Reims head coach Oscar Garcia claims Ekitike told him he wanted to stay.
